Scheduling posts

Scheduling posts

Whatever service you use to blog, or indeed to post to social media, the ability to schedule posts will greatly help you in using your time wisely.

Working or volunteering in church communications can often take a strain on your schedule – especially when your team is small (I can hear the cries of ‘team?!’ from the ‘lone rangers’. Keep at it, you’re doing great). Therefore anything that can help you use your time wisely and efficiently is worth investigating.

Scheduling posts doesn’t require too much explanation – rather than pressing ‘post’, you choose a time that the post will go ‘live’ and then you press schedule. Simple!

The usefulness of this, however, is in the ability to schedule multiple posts that will go out to your blog or social networks at specified times in the future. This means you can write content months in advance, and not have to worry about posting them as they will post themselves! There are even WordPress plugins that show scheduled posts on a calendar, meaning you can stay aware of your communications output and check up on it.

This is particularly useful for posts related to upcoming events, or sermon series, where you can plan a whole campaign in advance, knowing any changes will be unlikely. Of course, if you need to make changes, you can simply log in and edit the post as you usually would.

Spending a few hours creating a batch of scheduled content for your church website, blog or social networks can save you lots of time in the long run, and enables you, to an extent, to compartmentalise your communications output, meaning you can focus on fewer tasks that need attention on a day-to-day basis.

Hint: I didn’t write this post today 😉

  1. Good points Joe. One thing to think of is disabling scheduled posts at times of tragedy which hit the news – think how your scheduled post may sound trite if it’s posted amid national mourning for example.

Definitely true – highlights the importance of monitoring your posts as they go out, which is helped by having an editorial calendar where you can see at a glance what’s happening.
